Countries Will Hold Fourth Meeting of the Forum of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development
The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean will hold on March 15-18, 2021 the fourth meeting of the Forum on Sustainable Development, in which representatives of governments, international institutions, the private sector, academia and civil society will review the progress and challenges related to implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region.
This gathering, to be held virtually for the first time, will be inaugurated on Tuesday, March 16 at 8 a.m. local time in Costa Rica (GMT-6) by Carlos Alvarado, the President of Costa Rica, which currently holds ECLAC’s presidency pro tempore; Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; Munir Akram, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC); and Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
The regional Forum seeks to provide useful opportunities for peer learning through voluntary reviews, the exchange of good practices and the discussion of shared goals. Its conclusions are relayed directly to the United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, the global mechanism for follow-up on the 2030 Agenda, which meets each July in New York.
During the fourth meeting, countries will engage in a dialogue on a resilient and sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and achieving the 2030 Agenda. They will also address forging a better future in the Caribbean and key issues for implementing the development agenda in that subregion in the post-COVID-19 phase.
Furthermore, Alicia Bárcena will present an annual progress report on regional advances and challenges in relation to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, entitled “Building forward better: action to strengthen the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
The fourth meeting of the Forum will conclude with a high-level roundtable entitled “Building an inclusive and effective pathway to achieve the 2030 Agenda within the context of the decade of action and post-pandemic recovery from COVID-19.”
As part of the preparatory activities for the regional gathering, on Monday, March 15, the Latin America and the Caribbean civil society meeting will take place along with a high-level event on the challenges faced by ECLAC’s associate members in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, with the participation of Alicia Bárcena, ECLAC's Executive Secretary, among other activities.
