UN Deputy Secretary-General, ECLAC Executive Secretary and Other High-Level Authorities Will Inaugurate the Seventh Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development
The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed; the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs; and other high-level authorities will participate in the opening session of the seventh meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development, which will take place on April 15-18 at ECLAC’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile.
More than 1.000 people are already confirmed to attend this event, including representatives of government, international institutions, the United Nations System, the private sector, academia and civil society. At the gathering, which will feature more than 30 side events, participants will analyze progress and challenges for fulfilling the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region.
The intergovernmental meeting will be inaugurated on Tuesday, April 16 at 9:00 a.m. local time in Santiago, Chile (GMT -04:00 horas) by Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, and Laura Fernández Delgado, Minister of National Planning and Economic Policy of Costa Rica, in her capacity as Vice-Chair of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development.
At the meeting, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs will present the document The Challenge of Accelerating the 2030 Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean: Transitions towards Sustainability, seventh report on regional progress and challenges in relation to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, which examines the evolution of and projections for the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The document analyzes in particular SDG 1 (no poverty), 2 (zero hunger), 13 (climate action), 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) and 17 (partnerships for the goals), along with projections for their fulfillment by 2030.
The first day of the meeting contemplates an interactive session in which authorities from the region will be able to share perspectives on the adoption of possible multilateral solutions for achieving a better tomorrow, ahead of the Summit of the Future to be held in New York on September 22-23, 2024.
During the meeting, Latin American and Caribbean country representatives will speak about the urgency of reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty at a time of multiple crises, effectively delivering sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions, and they will participate in a session to address the key issues related to progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda in the Caribbean subregion.
The event will include five panel discussions, in which the Forum’s member countries and other stakeholders will share their experiences and challenges regarding the 2030 Agenda’s implementation.
The seventh meeting of the Forum will be preceded by a meeting of the mechanism for civil society participation and by the Forum of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean, which will take place on Monday, April 15.
