Representatives of governments, the United Nations System, international organizations, the private sector, academia and civil society will analyze the progress and challenges for fulfilling the 2030 Agenda [2] in Latin America and the Caribbean during the seventh meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development [3], to be held on April 15-18 at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.
The regional Forum – which has been held annually since 2017 – aims to provide useful opportunities for peer learning through voluntary reviews, the exchange of best practices and the discussion of shared targets. Its conclusions are relayed directly to the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which is the global mechanism for follow-up on the 2030 Agenda that meets each year in July in New York.
The seventh meeting of this intergovernmental gathering will be inaugurated on Tuesday, April 16 at 9 a.m. local time in Santiago, Chile (GMT-3). At the meeting, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, will present the seventh report on regional progress and challenges in relation to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, which examines the evolution of and projections for the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The document analyzes in particular SDG 1 (no poverty), 2 (zero hunger), 13 (climate action), 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) and 17 (partnerships for the goals), along with projections for their fulfillment by 2030.
The first day of the meeting contemplates a special session in which authorities from the region will be able to share perspectives on the adoption of possible multilateral solutions for achieving a better tomorrow, ahead of the Summit of the Future to be held in New York on September 22-23, 2024.
During the meeting, Latin American and Caribbean country representatives will speak about the urgency of reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty at a time of multiple crises, effectively delivering sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions, and they will participate in a session to address the key issues related to progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda in the Caribbean subregion.
The event will include five panel discussions, in which the Forum’s member countries and other stakeholders will share their experiences and challenges regarding the 2030 Agenda’s implementation.
The seventh meeting of the Forum will be preceded by a meeting of the mechanism for civil society participation and by the Forum of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean, which will take place on Monday, April 15.
