Biografía
Benito Wheatley is the Special Envoy of the Premier of the British Virgin Islands who serves as the Government’s United Nations (UN) Representative in Latin America and the Caribbean, Representative (Ambassador) to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Representative (Ambassador) to the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), and Commissioner to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). He is currently a Vice Chair of the 40th Session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), a Vice Chair of the 30th Session of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC), and Chair of the UN ECLAC Associate Members Working Group. Prior to his appointment in 2018, Benito served simultaneously as British Virgin Islands Representative to the United Kingdom (UK) and European Union (EU) and Director of the BVI London Office from 2014-2018. During his tenure as Representative, he served as Co-Chair of the European Union-Overseas Countries and Territories Financial Services Working Group, Chair of the Overseas Counties and Territories Association (OCTA), Chair of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA), and Vice Chair of 26th Session of the CDCC. He holds a Master of Science degree in Diplomacy and International Strategy from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Morehouse College. He is also a Continuing Policy Fellow at the Centre for Science and Policy (CSaP) at the University of Cambridge and a member of the prestigious International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He has represented the British Virgin Islands on numerous occasions in regional and international fora involving sustainable development and climate change, among other things. He is also the author of many articles on the challenges of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Caribbean, Caribbean Overseas Territories, and the British Virgin Islands.
